Why Does My Razor Pull and Tug Instead of Glide?

A razor pulls and tugs — instead of gliding — because the blade is dull, there isn't enough lubrication between the blade and skin, or you're applying too much pressure. Fixing even one of these three variables will immediately reduce drag and irritation.

That grinding, catching feeling isn't just annoying — it's your skin telling you something is mechanically wrong. Every tug means the blade is working harder than it should, dragging hair and lifting skin cells rather than cleanly cutting. The three causes of razor drag (and what to do about each)

1. A dull blade

This is the most common culprit, and it's counterintuitive: a dull blade doesn't feel dull until you're mid-shave and it's too late. Razor blades dull faster than most people realize. Factors that accelerate dulling include:

  • Coarse or dense hair
  • Rinsing the blade and leaving it wet (water accelerates oxidation of the edge)
  • Tapping the blade against the sink or wiping it against a towel — both micro-nick the edge

Signs your blade is due for a change: it tugs on the first stroke, the skin looks red immediately after (not a few minutes later), or you've used it more than 5–7 times on a full-body shave.

Most dermatologists and the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommend replacing blades every 5–7 shaves or sooner if you notice any resistance.

2. Not enough lubrication

Water alone provides almost no glide. You need a product that creates a slick film between the blade and skin: shaving cream, shaving gel, conditioner, or body oil all work. The thicker and more slip-heavy, the better.

A few things people get wrong here:

  • Using too little product and relying on water to fill the gap
  • Using a product that has dried out or foamed down by the time the blade reaches that section of skin
  • Shaving legs without re-applying product to each section before the blade passes

Re-lather or re-wet the skin and product as you go. If the skin feels tacky under the blade, that's drag waiting to happen.

3. Excess pressure

Cartridge razors are engineered to work at essentially zero applied pressure — the blade does the work, gravity and angle handle the rest. When you press harder, you flatten skin into the blade path, which causes more surface contact, more friction, and a higher chance of nicking raised hair follicles.

Practice the "light touch" test: hold the razor between two fingers only. If the blade still glides, you've found the right pressure.
